Artist Residency

The Don Julio Artist Residency commercial is a cinematic exploration of artistry, where creators from different disciplines music, fashion, visual art, and movement are brought together to express their individual narratives through a shared cultural lens. Each frame is crafted with intention, treating every moment like a scene in a film, where light, composition, and tone elevate the storytelling. The visuals aren’t just documentation but a deliberate attempt to translate the spirit of the residency into a cohesive, cinematic experience where art, identity, and atmosphere merge into one continuous story.

Technically, the execution follows a film-first approach where each image is treated like a frame from a motion picture, using intentional composition and controlled framing to place subjects within their environment rather than isolating them; lighting is directional and motivated often from practicals or natural sources to create depth, contrast, and mood without overfilling shadows, while lens choices in the 35mm–85mm range maintain a natural perspective with enough depth of field to balance subject separation and environmental context; the colour grade is kept cohesive and filmic with subtle desaturation, softened contrast, and intentional colour separation to unify the visuals, and the overall shooting approach is patient and observational, focusing on real moments, gestures, and in-between expressions to give the work an authentic cinematic presence rather than a staged feel.

In the ad campaign, set in a New Orleans-inspired retro bar with a Savivi twist, actor Loyiso Macdonald embodies the whisky ‘Khonesoo’. Throughout the campaign he is styled in a kilt — playing on the irony of how Savanna Neat has the feeling of whisky, but it by no means is. The styling, setting and performance in the ad lend to the overall theme of unseriousness in trying to be ‘serious’ like whisky.
